400;\">Heel eerlijk ... toen ik pas begon te leren over hoe dikke mensen in onze maatschappij gestigmatiseerd worden, vond ik het woord \u2018discriminatie\u2019 veel te sterk. Ik snapte wel dat er vooroordelen bestaan en dat we daardoor opmerkingen krijgen, en dat dat fout is \u2013 maar discriminatie? Nee, dat is toch alleen maar als het gaat over racisme en zo?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ondertussen weet ik natuurlijk wel beter: ja, dikke mensen worden \u00e9cht gediscrimineerd. En ik ga hier geen hele opsomming maken over de manieren waarop dat gebeurt, want ik wil het even geen deprimerende boel maken. Maar er zijn meer dan voldoende bewijzen en onderzoeken die aantonen dat dikke mensen wel degelijk anders behandeld en uitgesloten worden in onze maatschappij.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_2 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><strong>Foute logica<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_3 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omdat ik het zelf ook heb moeten leren, snap ik dus wel wanneer mensen niet onmiddellijk denken dat gewichtsdiscriminatie een probleem is. Dat het woord \u2018discriminatie\u2019 een beetje overdreven is. Ik snap het, maar ik ben het er niet mee eens. Vooral niet als mensen gaan uitleggen waarom ze vinden dat dikke mensen niet gediscrimineerd worden \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want meestal krijg je dan de uitleg dat <strong>discriminatie gebeurt op basis van kenmerken waar mensen zelf niks aan kunnen doen<\/strong>. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan racisme: mensen kunnen hun huidskleur niet veranderen, dus als ze op basis daarvan achtergesteld worden, dan is dat discriminatie. Als wij het gevoel hebben dat we buitengesloten worden, dan moeten we niet zagen over discriminatie, maar gewoon wat meer bewegen en wat minder eten. Want dan zou er helemaal geen probleem zijn om over te zeuren. Maar die logica is echt helemaal fout.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_4 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><strong>Niet onze schuld<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_5 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Om te beginnen werkt di\u00ebten niet op lange termijn. Dikke mensen kunnen helemaal niet \u2018gewoon\u2019 effe afvallen. Maar zelfs als dat w\u00e9l zou lukken, dan nog is dat geen goed argument.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Als je vindt dat dikke mensen maar moeten afvallen als ze niet gediscrimineerd willen worden, dan zeg je eigenlijk dat ze verantwoordelijk zijn voor hun eigen discriminatie.<\/strong> Dat het onze eigen fout is, dat het terecht is, dat het ok is. Maar laat me daarover heel duidelijk zijn: wanneer dikke mensen gediscrimineerd worden, is de oplossing niet dat wij ons lichaam moeten veranderen, maar dat de discriminatie moet stoppen.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ook dikke mensen zelf verantwoorden stigma en discriminatie soms. \u201cJa, maar ik ben ook wel te dik, dus het is logisch dat ik meer moet betalen voor een extra stoel in het vliegtuig.\u201d \u201cJa, ik kan ook gewoon een beetje afvallen als ik niet meer gepest wil worden.\u201d \u201cJa, het is nu eenmaal wel ongezond, he \u2026\u201d<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En ik snap dat. Ik dacht vroeger ook zo. Maar ik hoop dat je steeds meer beseft dat wij niet verantwoordelijk zijn om onze eigen discriminatie te stoppen. Het is ons probleem omdat wij er de gevolgen van dragen, maar de verantwoordelijkheid ligt wel degelijk bij de mensen die discrimineren. Want er zijn ook nog genoeg mensen die denken dat racisme niet echt een probleem is.
